How America’s Navy is Inspiring our Nation’s High School Students
The fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are projected to add more than one million jobs by the year 2020. The United States Navy is doing its part to inspire high school students to stay interested in STEM studies, and encourage them to pursue careers in these growing fields.
Presented by America’s Navy and Discovery Education, the website NavySTEMfortheClassroom.com provides an overview of some of the many exciting and challenging STEM-related educational and career opportunities available in the Navy. Visitors to the site can view videos highlighting some personal career stories and read about Navy educational programs such as the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC), the U.S. Naval Academy, and the Civil Engineer Collegiate Program (CECP).
Free Interactive Lesson Plans
The site also features a series of free interactive lesson plans specifically developed for 9-12 graders exploring topics such as robotics, sonar and echolocation, nuclear power, oceanography, and more. Teachers can use these innovative lesson plans and hands-on activities to help their students practice new skills, understand unique concepts, and learn about real-world STEM applications in the Navy.
Students can also play the Navy Proving Grounds which is designed to work in conjunction with the lessons. This fun widget tests students’ knowledge of the subjects covered in the lessons.
